A topic for fans of the London system

Yeah, if you're looking at the wrong line. Mind telling us what moves you actually put in? My Houdini 3 Pro gives 4.dxc5 e6 5.b4 a5 as -0.40 (Black is slightly better) at depth 22 (I don't want to run it for long on a position that's obviously terrible for White) which is vastly different from what you are reporting.

For the record, the moves are 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Bf4 c5 4.dxc5 e6! 5.b4?! a5 =+

Better is 5.e3 but it's just equal.

The london can be used aggressively in some lines. It merely has a passive reputation because it is often a choice opening for learning players who are a bit timid in the opening.

I agree that openings are only as passive or aggressive as you make them, but in no rational world is anybody calling that line a London.  Be like calling the BDG a London just because they both start d4.

I got surprised when I saw Lakdawala recommending the Morris Gambit...

I have been playing BDG for many years, and I wanted to get something solid with the London... and he suggest me that...

Lakdawala does state that e4 takes the game into non-London positions. He also states that e3 will take the game into normal London positions. Pick your poison!

I don't play chess to make your experience interesting. I play chess to learn, improve, and ultimately.... win. As a novice player the london system allows me to get most or all of my pieces developed and gives me a chance to play for a while before a beat down. Is it the only opening I play? No. But for the time being it is the one that gives me the best chance for a good game. If that means my opponet is bored, that's even better. Perhaps that boredom will lead to a mistake. I wonder if you would be bored playing against Kasparov? He's been known to play the London system on occasion. A number of highly rated GM's play it at times. Until I can improve sufficently to play the more advanced lines you find interesting, I will continue to play the London, Colle and Torre. Peace....
