But... but what do I do against 4. Qe2!! threatening 4... d5 5. exd5 where exd5 is no longer possible due to the absolute pin, @actual_knight_gaming?

Qe2 is easier to defend against, possibly because
- the absolute pin on the pawn can be broken by blocking with either the dark-squared bishop or queen
also because the early queen development isn't really recommended
i could also be completely wrong about this. im sorry lol dont hurt me

lol fair but then 0-0 and Re1 and you have yourself a game. I'm not a Bowdler defender but... loathe as I am to admit it, it is actually quite playable for both sides.

The top line isn't recommended? Damn man, the cloud analysis and leading theoreticans tricked us all.

I myself like the opening for the strong c- and d- pawns.
Defending against the Bowdler is a bit troublesome at times, though lol

Same. I came to play an Open, Closed, or Anti-Sicilian, not the hecking Bowdler, y'know what I mean? Thankfully nobody knows how to play it, so nobody plays Qe2 e5 stopping the d5 push with the threat of en passant, and the early d5 push is premature and allows White counterplay. If people did that and knew how to play, the Bowdler would be a lot scarier than the simple annoyance it currently is.

"I feel like playing a Sicilian today"
"ooo scary Bc4 (5?)"
I agree. The Bowdler is a monster when used in the right hands.
At my level, it's just people trying to play Scholar's Mate, lol

I agree. The Bowdler is a monster when used in the right hands.
Omg 🤣🤣🤣 that's really funny. If you think the Bowdler Attack is a monster, you really need to get better at playing the Sicilian.

Yeah, maybe that kinda monster.

So what do you mean by "knowing" the opening? Do you know all of the opening aims (incl. of the subvariations of course), middlegame strategies and move order subtleties or do you just play some moves without knowing why?
For amateurs who have regular fulltime jobs, it's already hard work to REALLY know a single opening.
