Beating Shredder

Shredding Shredder with the Stephenson Attack.

1.e4 e5  2. Bc4 Nf6  3. Nf3 Nxe4  4. Nc3 Nxc3  5. d2xc3 f6  6. Nh6 g6  7. Qd3!?

Which is apparently a theoretical novelty as I did not find it referenced on this opening database
After which the computer played ...7.) g5 which then produced a easy win for White.
Better would have been ...7 Qd7! stiffling all attacks.
But since it was a theoretical novelty the computer did not know what to do.
What is the lesson in this? Computers may not be stupid, but they are dumb.

It's not exactly the computer who's dumb here. You've not played against it's full strength, Shredder is excellent in limiting it's strength so that it can give you a level game. You need to change it to full strength if you want to get beat all the time.

Oh and I just noticed the link you gave isn't shredder. Maybe you're confusing shredder with little chess partner, which is far weaker than shredder.

Anwulf

Shredder Classic 4 at full strength plays 7. ...d6 after a momentary dalliance with Qe7.

Sorry I did not post sooner. I do not have access to a personal computer, and so it takes out of my time to reply to such inanities to use an Alekhine, from such nerds as this.

The links I inserted were delinked by an editor here. I guess they don't like posters sending to the "competition"?

One fellow on this forum estimates shredder online is only around 1800 and that his half patzer friend beats it all the time.

I do not need the snide comments, "poindexter" I reminds of this retarded kid where I work, who is always trying to correct everybody, including clients who come in.

I put it on expert mode every time, but the computer is dumb. It lacks any real mental power. Because each time, on that same variation it always plays that stupid losing ...7.) g5. because it cannot think of any other one, because there is no data to seach regarding that line of play. It cannot think, it only memorizes and searches.

Many times though it will play ...4) Nc6 instead of Nxc3, which in my opinion a smater move.

This is the link to shredder online.

Here is the link to the opening table base I was referring to

For Qd7 I obviously meant Qe7.

Steinitz said "[to the Boden- K gambit]  5...)f6 is the only move." Stephenson says "f6 and Qe7 are the only 2 moves."
