White has the initiative...

I've always found White's best line to be the Russian Variation (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Qb3 dxc4 6.Qxc4).

The number of times that I've played the Grunfeld as Black in tournament play I can count on my fingers.  It's no one line that keeps me from playing the Grunfeld.  It just isn't my cup of tea at all playing the Black side of it.

When I do play d4 as White, I pretty much play the Russian Variation exclusively and have gotten really good results with it.

Exchange variation is boring.  It's the variation all black players know at a minimum, so you aren't going to surprise him with it from the White side.  Much better off with Russian or f3 or Qa4+ if you're trying to take him out of book.

I like the (exchange) system with Be3/Rc1/Qd2

I find it easier to reduce the number of lines my opponent can play, therefore makes studying more effective in combating these lines. The more flexibility the opponent has the bigger the more hassle and headache in tackling all the lines. F3 isn't a bad line to take the game beyond a "book".

I have books on the subjet. In the beginning I didn't take on d5 and came with either Nf3/Bf4, for 80% of my games playing white and strangely enough I had a far better score playing those lines then the Exchange Variation. Why ? There is a lot to know on how to exactly play it with white. I personally feel better playing Bc4/Ne2 then Be3/Qd2. Still thats only the struggle till you eventually get the rook out of the diagonal and castle. But what then ? It goes that wild that you'll never play 2 games with the same ideas. Thats what makes this opening appealing. The options explode and basically you are on your own. This is what should make it appeal to play it as black. As to the variation (Qb3) Russian, if you compare it to the exchange variation, you lack the pawn on c3 , your queen is target, and the centre is not that solid.

If you know just a bit of theory in the Hungarian, the Russian is not a problem. The exchange is what always pains me the most.

I'm not longer a practicing gruenfelder, but I think the hardest line to play against is the mainline with h3. So (1. d4 nf6 2. c4 g6 3. nc3 d5 4. cxd5 nxd5. 5. e4 nxc3 6. bxc3 bg7 7. h3.

Combine this with trying to exchange sacrifice your rook for the dark bishop, and you have some really potential for an aggressive game.

I guess this thread has been revived? I personally have switched to the anti-grünfeld to avoid all the main line stuff because all the positions I get from the grünfeld are uncomfortable for me. Playing the f3 can also help transposing into the Samich which is a lot of fun to play.

These type of positions are pretty fun to play and there are good chances for both sides.

Grünfeld is solid. It was played 5 times at the Yekaterinburg Candidates': 5 draws.
