If you want something simple then avoid the King's Indian like the plague. I'd personally go for the Philidor or the Caro-Kann against e4, and the Queens Gambit Declined against d4.

What's a good opening for Black for beginners? I was considering the King's Indian, but the early space disadvantage makes me too uncomfortable. Are there any other simple openings that don't sacrifice so much space?
