Caro-Kann is a good choice.

Capablanca NEVER lost a serious game as Black in the Caro-Kann! Kasparov learned it and used it as a junior when Botvinnik was training him. Try it, its a better weapon than you think.

Capa didn't lose many serious games regardless of opening.  Karpov did quite well with the Caro as well.  Still its a better shield than weapon.

Can you recommend a book or other kind of resource to learn the caro-kann?

Hi Tia, Anything by Jeremy Silman or these Russian-sounding guys! Any book which discusses THEMES rather than loads of theory. Also, when playing, consider FIVE options all the time. I call it the Five Rule. Best regards, Tony Blades.

Everything is a weapon. A rolled-up newspaper is a weapon and can kill! See Taoism etc.

By that token a shield is a weapon.  DId you not understand what I said? Would you prefer I quote Rambo "I always thought the best weapon was the mind."

I dont think there is a more qualified person than Karpov to write on the caro kann. I have his book on the advance variation and its excellent. I dont have his book on the classical caro kann yet but will get it when I can. Does anyone have it ?

Is that a black repertoire book, or an objective look at it? (I quite fancy taking it up as White).

I find it to be more objective than a black repertoire book. I recommend the book for both CK players and those who play the advance variation against it. Another interesting look at the CK is a joint work by Karpov and Beliavsky, with Karpov taking up the black side in all the important variants and Beliavsky the white side. I enjoyed this book very much. The book is titled : the Caro Kann in black and white.

I don't have Karpov's book on the C-K but I do have his book on the Petroff.  It seems to be an excellant book, well balanced and even a bit of humor.  It is not encyclopedic in its treatment but does seem a good work.
