Caro-kann: the c6-c5 break

if white doesn't take and does not play c3, should black take cxd4? To me this seems good, as black gets a central majority and eliminates an important pawn. Also the e5-pawn is somewhat weak now. On the other hand, black gives up the tension perhaps prematurely. Can someone give me advice on this?

I would play Nc6 first because otherwise white will take Nxd4 and attack the bishop on f5. Cheers

whatever white is playing isn't even a line, and its really bad. fairly pointless question.

you could really play anything in this position, cxd4 even after c3 is still ok.

Why is it bad? Nigel Short has played it a lot...
