caro kann
Caro-kann vs French Defense
Caro is easier to learn and the top players play it. I have t seen a single top player play the French. Because the pieces are all trapped in the French and I can be vulnerable to kingside attacks I guess

GM simon williams plays the french, and I believe Korchnoi played it as well? And Nigel Short?
But I'm no expert on the french, and i dont care either way.

Ian Nepomniachtchi plays it a lot.
Hikaru, danya, nepo. Who does the French have? A 2400 gm? Magnus? Alireza? Ding? Fabi? Nah no one plays the French not even the computer

Why no one points, that both french and caro in many lines look quite similar? There is c5 pawn idea in caro, same as in french. There is Nf5 idea creating extra pressure on d4 on both openings. In many lines of caro you need to take care about light square bishop same as in french. In my humble opinion caro is less agressive, but much more flexible , and it nearly always delivers drawish positions for black. But both openings tell the same story. For tournament purposes i nearly always choose caro, as dont whant to deal whith winawer. In blitz however french is better, as it gives a little bit more dynamics.

even leela doesn't like the french
Who is she? Your girlfriend?
What have the French done to her?

Magnus and Fabiano have played thε French MANY times. Ding and Firouzja- less often.
They are right to say that ignorance is bliss...
imo it depends. Caro-Kann can lead to losses if you play too passively, while in some French lines the backwards e-pawn is particularly unappetizing.
