If you play on your phone then it doesnt show you the names of openings, i just started playing on the computer an noticed this. But it also doesnt say "lasker trap, play nf3 instead on e3" lol they still need to know what to do.

It does seem unfair to offer in-game information to some players but not others... I play with both app and computer, but I understand that many people only use the app.

including the names of the openings or sub variations is meant to help build a repitiore, you can see the win loss percentages with certain openings you play or play against. giving a name to something makes it easier to identify and since there are hundreds of thousands of variations this is important. so yes people should know what to do against people playing for tricks like the lasker trap, just like we all figured out the wayward queen stuff. after all this is just online chess and is used for learning and not taken too seriously. personally i dont think i would learn very much by playing gimmicky openings as a primary weapon, it fun once in a while but people should eventually move on from it.

As a sub-1200 player,  I try to play opening principles only. But I find it fascinating to see some weird and wonderful openings that I never knew existed, let alone know how to play happy.png
