Since you know the relative values of the chess pieces, what is preventing you from simply adding the values in your head? This is the usual way of knowing who is ahead (at least materially) at tournaments.

You can also use the computer (use Excel file to create a table) or a pad and pencil and add the numbers.

As for playing a friend using such computer software, you can both use this site to make your moves. You can also use www.chess.com function to see the caputred pieces and their relative values for free. If your friend does not have a computer or does not like using the Internet, then just buy a set.

Just some thoughts.

Thanks for your reply. Actually i am teaching chess to my seven year old daughter and she keeps me asking whether she is ahead or lagging, for that purpose i wanted to know a software where she can see the latest staus.

Hope you will now tell me the site from where i can download a software just like that of chesscom.

Bye.

Again, why not have her count the pieces that would be in front of her when captured?

Children like to touch things so this would also be another form of teaching her. Plus she will learn to do addition in her head.

Don't let the computer get in the way of learning or teaching. =)

(by the way, I studied psychology at a unversity)
