Tch, c4 is the best. That way your opponent will have to resign on the count that he is deceaced. c4 for the explosive win!!!!

Here is a very recent game I played with a strong attack using d4 on live.

why not e4 or d4 as a title??!!

I got to 1800+ OTB with 1. d4 and 1. c4 (although the opening itself was of little consequence) but I'm learning 1. e4 now. I feel it will help my chess to get more experience in the Open Games or incredibly complex lines of the Dragon and Ruy Lopez. I don't know if I prefer one over the other since they're so different. However, I feel it's easier to play 1. d4 but also easier to equalize against it.

Well I'm glad so many people prefer e4, because I love the french defence.

If you are beginner, you should shelf d4 until you know how to play. e4 is definitely the better choice under any circumstances because, if he answers e5, it will be even(and maybe white has a minuscule advantage), and then whoever is better will usually win. But it's usually a struggle.

I was not able to use 1.d4 until I had done an extensive amount of study, and not without losing many games. It is not for beginners at all. It requires a positional and tactical understanding that is not required of e4, usually. I know this because, if I want to win a game very fast against beginners, I use 1. d4, and then try for something like the Catalan or the King's Indian Attack, which are highly transpositional and can head in any Mountain Ranges you want.

(I like transpositional openings)

Avatar of KnightlyKing

well e4 is more complicated and contains more tactics, against  a stronger player than me ,i loose with e4 but i have chances with d4

Avatar of antne003

i use e4 for white, as i  like to play the scotch.  as  black defenses,  i use c3 (caro kann) against e4 and d5 against d4 (slav defense)

sorry but i'm just a beginner and i needed a openingh for white  and defenses for black

hope i was correct on the start of the slav defense?

                             thanks  tony  from jersey shore(antne003)

ps what are  the best  variation lines for caro-kann(i like panov attack)  and for  slav?)

1.d4

If it's good enough for Anand, it's good enough for me.

Anand is predominately an 1e4 player and I know you know.....

Avatar of ozzie_c_cobblepot

Well there's that. But when it came time for the most important match of his career, he turned to ....... 1.d4! I think he even gave it an exclam when he annotated the match.

The list of 1.d4 players also includes Kasparov, Karpov, Petrosian, Botvinnik, Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine.

i like e4, especially against weaker players. I love the book My System and a lot of the openings he talks about start with e4.

Why is that.

Because to play the d4 effectivly means controlling the center gradually, True you can play the QG  to open up the game a little, however the development of the pieces on the King side take a little longer, so black can develop a king side attack taking advantage of whites undeveloped King side. I have been exploring a line of the d4 called veresov-richter attack. I have made a small improvement to it, where I wound up with a knight and bishop for a bishop in the first seven moves, though that was not the intent.

Anyway this was the position. I got to. Of the 13 games I have played that got to this position only one played the correct continuation of Bf5. Everyone else played h6, or Be7. Both are natural moves, meant to prevent the pin on the knight. But what follows is Bxf6 (Bxf6 or Qxf6 or gxf6 for blacks responce)  and then Nxg4 capping blacks bishop. Anyway the intent was to cause black to waste tempo by moving the Bf5 and then I follow up Bd3 offering up an exchange getting rid of blacks active bishop.

Usually it's white who attacks on the kingside though, as he gets more control of the center. However, he can also attack on the queenside, and in that case black could attack on the kingside.

Lately I've been trying to play with c4 to strengthen my positional play. Of the three main pawn moves c4 seems the most positionally based. The only problem that I have with e4 is that it invites the sicilian which seems to equalize for black with best play. Again, c4 is the most positionally solid of the opening moves. It stakes a claim to the center with a pawn that is less valuable than either of the center pawns. My favorite opening move is probably d4. Some play it positionally but I prefer to head for a tactical game by playing the Trompowsky or Levitsky or Hopton attack. Perhaps the fact that I haven't used d4 on this site explains my lower than average rating. But I'm sure the experience I'm gaining from playing 1. c4 will eventually compensate for the blow to my ego.
