Danish Gambit

I wanted to play the Ruy Lopez as black. I was even ready for the scotch, king's gambit, evans or the giuco.  But this guy used against me the Danish gambit in our three minute games everytime he had the white pieces.  I was not prepared for this kind of opening and I lost three times against it. Or maybe it's the patzer in me, not the opening. I feel that this opening cannot be sound, so there must be a "refutation" somewhere.

The Danish gambit can be very dangerous if you don't know how to react to it. There are ways to accept or decline the Danish and get a good position, just go on Wikipedia or YouTube and search chess Danish gambit and you should find enough information to help you out.

Rosentreter's Defense (3...Qe7) is a very good way. I played the Danish Gambit exclusively against 1...e5 for a few years, and I was surprised that I didn't see 3...Qe7 more often. Much more common was 3...d5, when White often gets the bishop pair, also taking both pawns and 5...Qe7 (Chigorin's defense) I saw more often than 3...Qe7. Maybe people got the two confused.

Both Larry Kaufman and Victor Bologan give Rosentreter's defense in their repertoire books, though Bologan also gives 3...d5 leaving the reader to decide. I would advise against 3...d5 as I believe it's unambitious and due to its popularity that the Danish Gambiteer will be familiar and comfortable with the resulting positions.

Another good way was outlined by Pfren in his Danish Cracker article on here. It's the Kolisch defense, taking both pawns and 5...Bb5+, which was first played at master level in Capenhagen 1863 by Baron Ignatz Von Kolisch.

I like your suggestion, Dolphin27. I normally accept the gambit and do ok with it, but 3... Qe7 is a more unusual reply that I might try switching to. Thanks for pointing it out.

i am switching to play 1...e5 as black and i also don't have much experience with this gambit, becouse i open with 1.d4 as white. Here what happened, i don't know lines just  common sense. it wa a blitz game. My opp had experience and moved very quickly and i was in danger and time trouble almost entire half of the game and he wanted to flag me as patzers do. Never go for the flag if ur opp is much higher rated and game has inc. And you have good position and time adv.
