sorry Chess.com staff if i put it in the wrong place...I only can think of the Chess opening catagory
pvmike
A good opening for players who like to attack is the Evans gambit, and if your opponent plays the Sicilian you can play the Morra-Smith Gambit.

Would this one as black work for you? I think it's a book opening but I'm not sure.I use my knights to great effect so I like it.

With black, look up (on youtube) the budapest gambit.  It looks strange but offers black many tactical lines, even a possible smothered mate within about 10 - 12 moves...not to mention it can easily transpose into a variety of indian defenses.

Thanks!

After King's pawn, I get the knights out ASAP. Then either Bishop depending on opponents' board position. As white, I've become comfortable with that (Also playing similar rating to you).

The posted line is fine, but the name 'two knights defense' is a little misleading, since it's actually an attacking line.  It's actually a pawn sac, if white wants it.

I would recommend 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 for both colours, and try not to rely on memorising past the first few moves in an opening to start with.  always try to think why a move is played.  for one thing this makes it easier to remember, but also you will find you're learning tactical and strategic ideas rather than just 'lines'.  If you're losing in the opening and it isnt to fools/scholar's mate then it's not your opening theory letting you down, but your choice of opponent.  Laughing

That line is much less sound, and is much trickier.  It's basically a coffee-house move.  You pretty much commit to the pawn sac when you play 3...Nf6.  If you dont like this, then you should play 3...Bc5.  (I play 3...Bc5 as i like my pawns)

I like to play this line of the two knights defense, it works pretty well.

 don't play 4..Bc5?? it loses a rook.

5.Nxf7 Bxf2+ 6.Kf1 Qe7 7. Nxh8

I playing e4 and a series of gambits as white.

King's Gambit vs. e5

Morra Gambit vs. Sicilian

Reti Gambit vs. French

 Just to name a few...

As black...I don't know much about "defensive" openings but the CaroKan and Scandinavian are both very solid and popular.

darthstapler8, what attack?
pvmike
you're right darthstapler8 , black does get a strong attack after Nxf7, but black has to play extremely accurate, and white can force a draw in the main line. Also after Bxf7+ white just wins a pawn and black doesn't get enough of an attack to compensate for the pawn. This line is really sharp , I don't know if I'd recommend it for beginners.

thank you all!....but I studied  2 knights defence when I was rated 1174.....so its a little bit boring,.
chessfanforlife
oh and I dont like boring oppenings...

I agree...what makes it hard for the beginner is an amount of different variations that need to be calculated through, which gives it a little more chances to make mistake. I looked through those game that where listed above and I am inclinded to think that wins for Black were as a result of mistakes made by White.

Now as much as I hold the Scandanavian in high esteme, it is far from defensive. If you want to create a safe, solid defence as black I would suggest the French as the way to go.
