I came across this in a live game and it looked bad, but then I went on to lose the game.  Is there a refutation?

I actually don't hate it. It looks interesting to me. At a glance it seems very playable for black to me

It's the Balogh Defense, tough to play as Black if White knows what they are doing (avoiding exf5), but the type of line a Black practitioner would likely know a bit more about than White.

Stephen Bucker has an article about it as well

Wait a second, I was taught that White's best plan was exf5 followed by trading the LSB's. Now you're saying that White should avoid exf5?

I like that game Conzipe Smile

Avatar of birdboy1

yes but don't you think Nh8 mate is just a little theatrical compared to just Ne5 mate?

I like the Bg5 mate too...

Also called the Balogh Counter-Gambit, as it was seen as a way to decline the Staunton Gambit. Nakamura has actually played this and won. The game is featured as article #6 in Keith Hayward's "The Road Not Taken" series at Chessville.

I've played it a few times myself. It's almost, but not quite, good enough for regular play.

Conzipe, hmmm.... that position at the end seems like White has a definite plusWink... my engine allows a maximum of 32 lines to be investigated simultaneously, it finds 32 separate moves which lead to forced mate, including  three mate-in-23s.

Yes...from move 18.

I think the reason for that is just because after for example 18. a3, black still has no move to stop all the different threats.

Hello, is there anyone interested in playing the Balogh? I do play it a lot and I think its fully playable. Greetings from Germany .......

Not really a good opening as blacks' light square become very weak.

It's the Anti-e4 RAR Attack!

null

And... The Article on the Anti-e4 RAR attack!

https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/rar-tip-2-play-the-anti-e4-rar-attack

It reads, "In some games, you need an opening that is very evil, and will confuse the opponent and force him into passivity while being scared, even though he is playing white! That is why I saved chess by creating the RAR attack vs. e4. There are many RAR attacks, but only one that is against e4. without even considering your opponent's reply, play 1...d6 and 2...f5. This may seem dumb but you are RARing his center...."

Tricky defense and not real easy to meet; there is national master who plays blitz and use the Balogh, he nearly beat a IM in a tournament. Just developing pieces and obeying open principles is not enough to get an advantage.
