So how many is that 1.e4 v 1.d4 etc?
e4
If you want to learn a fun opening tmx3, I also recommend learning the Hippo. It's a very intimidating opening for your opponents who think you don't know what you're doing, that you're playing silly moves, then POW they don't know what has hit them. It was played against me a few times by a top player, for fun, and it drove me crazy! lol
I personally love 1.e4.
1.d4 or 1.e4 are the most popular/common openings by the grandmasters for a reason. It's the best way to gain control of the centre. Usually, whoever has centre control has the best chance of winning. Especially by those who really know chess.
If you're playing low rated players then the odds are they will blunder, and no matter how much centre control they had in the early stages, they blew it. Not so much with the experts. :)
Thanks! Will learn that opening and try it :)

Can't say for sure because of transpositional possibilities. For example, a Queen's Gambit did not necessarily start with 1 d4. Anyway, it seems likely that, for now, there are still bunches of both 1 e4 and 1 d4 games.
The Caro-Kann Panov-Botvinnik Attack can transpose into a Semi-Tarrasch QGD. It starts as a KP game but doesn't end there.
you could play 1 c4 and transpose into a bunch of different stuff and drive yourself mad
Lots of masochists around.

How was that masochistic?

Masochist: a person who is gratified by pain, degradation, etc., that is self-imposed or imposed by others.
'Choosing' to "drive yourself mad" could be considered as masochism, considering we play chess for gratification.
Anyway, it was a joke. :)
Try opening with your knight to f3. Then counter his pawn to d5 with your pawn to d4. If black moves either knight you place your bishop on f4 and you own the e5 square without even occupying it!

The December 2015 issue of Chess lists the top twenty openings compiled from a list of 4737 October games where both players were rated over 2400 Elo. One can not take position on this list too seriously because it is greatly influenced by how the openings are grouped. For example, all the Retis are grouped together, while English is separated into 1 ... c5, 1 ... e5, etc. Nevertheless, for what it is worth, the list reports 224 King's Indians, 183 Slavs, 165 Caro Kanns, 153 Nimzo-Indians, 145 1 ... c5 Englishes, 144 Queen's Indians, 125 1 ... e5 Englishes, 122 Kan Sicilians, 113 Declined Queen's Gambits, 110 1 ... Nf6 Englishes, 106 Ruy Lopez Berlin Defences, 99 Najdorf Sicilians, 91 Classical Gruenfelds, and 77 Taimanov Sicilians.
