e6 vs d6 Sicilian

Chuck639

Which one do you guys prefer against the main line in 1.e4, c5 2.Nf3, d6 or e6?

I was reviewing my Sicilian games to note I was running into a lot of anti-Sicilians where I utilized e6 structures.

I was playing around with the Kan-Wing Attack line and was actually enjoying it and may consider playing it live or even replace d6 altogether. No need to have two open Sicilian lines.

If I getaway from d6, I can avoid the Canal Attack which is a plus but I give up the Najdorf and transpositions to the Dragon or Botvinnik System.

I am in a deep think tank at the moment. May be just play some online games and see how they go before I commit to OTB?

d6 for sure. e6 is so boring and white gets all the pressure he wants.

Considering that I only play the Sicilian from White's perspective, and only the Delayed Alapin variant, I much prefer seeing 2... d6 from my opponents.

Thanks for sharing that.

Against the Delayed Alapin my line is Nf6 and e5 to lock up the centre (Botvinnik like).

I would have to investigate further on how I would play against that after 2.e6. I prefer lines that involved a fianchetto LSB so I am familiar with the Katalimov or O’Kelly structures which is why the Kan-Wing Attack line attracts me and easy to play.

If I'm not allowed my favorite kalashnikov?

I am going with e6, and only because the Kan is an extremely funny opening.

I'd caution against playing Nf6 and e5 against the delayed alapin. There are multiple things wrong with this. First off in botvinnik setups you want your knight on e7/e2 to facilitate f5/f4 breaks. With the knight on f6 this is pretty strange, but not completely terrible. The second thing is that white can still break in the center with d4, which will be a bit uncomfortable for black.

Nf6 is a fine move, but I would probably follow it up with a fianchetto and not play e5.

I am currently exploring  my go to b6/Katalimov after 2.e6 and it works in this case. It transposes to a French game but I can live with that.

Gives me the imbalance and counter play that I aim for.

2...e6 for me since it is less theory, and I just like the positions better.

Thanks for the reply.

I am still exploring with the engine and like how the games tend to break open and piece placements are logical.

I am testing out middle game ideas and plans, and liking it so far.

I am just going to start playing e6. I can dig this.

I’m trying to get away from early e5. I was playing the Opecensky.

Funny? So no minor pieces are developed yet haha.

And you play Qc7. Lol

Always keep in mind that your choice of openings should be based on the type of middlegames you like to play.  And not on what your favorite GM plays, or how "aggressive", "tactical", "strategic", or "positional" it is.

Noted, thank-you.

I am doing to this strip down my repertoire as much as possible because 2. d6 is redundant when e6 structures is common in my anti-Sicilian replies and can be played against the mainline as well. I am familiar and enjoy those middle game positions, as well in having accumulated experience that are transferrable to 2.e6 are bonuses.

I won’t miss the Canal Attack, Dragon and Botvinnik System are the other pluses.

I’m working on that in conceding to e5.

It’s not new to me though; same idea in the Katalimov/O’Kelly line.

Hold on, I go b5 and fianchetto my Katalimov Bishop. Rook to the c file ideas.

Generally I don't like those lines for black if white does a speedy castling line. It's too slow for black. I prefer to delay b5 and go with a scheveningen structure with d6 Be7 and Nf6 and only then play b5 (if possible)

Yeah but then I just transposed back to the Najdorf lol.

I play the Najdorf for the Opecensky line. Oh well.

I wish I was able to follow this conversation, but I have no clue what’s flying. How do you guys know what each line is called and everything? I didn’t even get past Chuck639s question!

Chess osmosis. You hang around chess content and you will eventually learn these opening names. Alternatively you can look up the names of these openings and familiarize yourself with them!

YYB6135

I hear, but I guess I just don’t understand chess enough to play anything besides e4…

Don’t worry, I know very little as well but the little I do know I know well.
