depends on what style you prefer to play.

I run Guicco Piano as white typically and Franco-Sicilian as black.

Bastien - see my topic about it for white and KIA for black.

I mostly lose though...

I have no idea what any of them are called.  I just play logical (maybe) moves.

The kings gambit is a very powerfull opening when you master the tactics.I like it very much but not shure about handling it in tournaments against high rated players.

At your rating, knowing exact openings aren't as helpful as knowing basic opening guidelines.

1. control the center. This means that white should play e4 and d4 whenever possible(barring them getting captured, of course), and black's goal is to play d5 and e5(again, barring them getting captured.) Knights, likewise, are more useful nearer the center of the board than the rim.

OK, so maybe this wouldn't happen in a real game. But it isn't hard to see the developmental advantage white has.

2. Tempo matters! With rare exceptions, never move the same piece in the opening twice!

3. Early queen moves are generally bad. They waste tempo, and often presents a target for your opponent to bash.

4. Especially in open positions, castle early.

5. Be careful about traps. If your a move is too good to be true, it probably is. Analyze it carefully before, for instance, you take a queen "for free"

for a beginner, i'd probably recommend the italian game.

Honestly, there is a ton of great material available online to help you pick openings that suit your style.  The exeter chess club website is very good for what you are looking for.  A famous historic GM (Reti maybe?) said that all reasonably sound openings are playable at the amateur level.  Happy hunting.

Oh, right. Never mind. An almost-identical position occured in the tactics trainer, and i was tired and just assumed it was absolutely identical. A thousand apologies.

Wait.  I just realized crucial info is missing here.  Are we talking about bullet or longer games?  In bullet I recommend f2, Kf2-g3-h4, etc...
