Who do you think is the best chess player there ever was.

Kasparov is the highest rated Chess player, but I believe that Fischer accomplished more in his career.

This topic is not debatable. The answer is obviously the great:

Mikhail Tal

You know I would agree with you if there had never been a Fischer, Capablanca, Lasker, Alekhine or Kasparov.

However Tal should be in the top six on anybody's list !

Some would and could argue he is first ,second or third.

Just imagine how much greater his ability and career would have been if not for his fondness for vodhka and his ill health!??

Fischer thought very highly of him and that's more than good enough for me.

By the way  thier Styles are quite different but  Paul Keres and Tal

 both were geniuses.--SIX

Good Question.

Garry Kasparov was the greatest over a large period of time, while Fischer was his equal for a small amount of time. And then, the joker in the pack is Jose Raul Capablanca. A little research found that he made the least number of mistakes in his career. But all things considered, the greatest chess player ever, is probably Ernesto Bongcloud.

Tal is my favourite player of all time . This includes his persona , the way he played and theway he lived his life . He had no real enemies and was almost universally liked . And I certainly can't say the same thing about Fischer or Kasparov. There will be another Kasparov but there will never be another Tal , his name alone is a synonym to brilliance and explosive play , so far not matched by any other player.

to hard to decide were always getting better so that person probably hasnt played yet or been born even.

Tal himself once said that "Fischer is the greatest genius to ever descend from the chess heavens". As for Fischer, he said that "Morphy is probably the greatest genius of them all."  Just some food for thought. Smile

Morphy was a great player. Fischer was a great player. Maybe they were both better at chess than Tal, but Tal had unmatchable skill with sacrifices and tactics.
