Gambits

Some are good, some less, some bad. I found the following video:

The Chess GAMBITS Tier List ft. Hikaru Nakamura

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9N6Bo7BBPg

okay, it's long, no need to watch it, it's about Hikaru, deciding which gambit gets which rating.

so... from the end of the video.

Unstoppable: Vienna. Danish, Blackmar, Nakhmanson, Evans, Urusov, Stauton.

Very Powerful: Scotch, Belgrade, Lisistyn, Haloween, From's.

The say "King's Gambit" and Benko Gambit are "Total Trash". oh...

The King's Gambit has Declined in popularity, but things that have 20 pages on Wikipedia, usually aren't "Total Trash".

Hikaru Does play gambits, he even sort of invented one, in the Scandinavian, for White - b4 - threatening the queen on a5.

What do you think?

---

I know that there "Every gambit refuted" by GM Perelshteyn, and I agree, but... who want to play chess? such bore... just win. so I'm into gambits now.

---

this game's for nerds. yes, the Botez sisters are nerds. or geeks. being female and nice looking doesn't matter - nerd is in the heart.

okay, I guess gingers have extra energy (cats too). I know they get up from bed easily. I saw that a Lot.

No smith-morra on the list, very surprising...

Benko and Kings Gambit are very playable.... Alexandr Fier (for example) employs the Kings Gambit on occasion in blitz and beats 2800 quite often with it

No such thing as unstoppable gambits, but they are indeed very fun to play, and refuting them, in rapid or faster, especially for someone below 2000 is not easy

Hikaru nowhere near invented, not even sorta, the b4 in the scandi (Leonhardt gambit), I don't know where you get that from...

You're all over the place, what does the botez sisters and nerds and gingers and cats have anything to do with it?

I basically play gambits almost all the time so much so that in one of the forums someone commented "d5 and Nd4 someone needs a break from gambits" in reply to a game I posted in that forum called "Gambits ... which to take and which to decline"

I've also tried my hand at inventing a few gambits and both of the gambits have highly shocking success rates in my daily games and others as well :

Position from Gambit #1

Position from Gambit #2 with 2.b5! and Gambit #3 with 4.d5!

There are many more such gambits I've invented/tried to invent !

Regarding the chess openings tier lists videos by GM Hikaru Nakamura and IM Levy Rozman (aka 'GothamChess').  There are separate tier list videos for beginner, intermediate and GM level.  Within a video each opening is ranked in terms of its appropriateness vis-a-vis player skill level.  Here is part 1 of the 3-part Tier List for Beginners...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9CwH47r6og&list=PL4KCWZ5Ti2H43-gcoByRnZs5fVR_Lg133&index=4&ab_channel=GMHikaru

They will frequently refer to some openings as "garbage" or "bad" - an unfortunate choice of terms in my view. However, these qualifiers are meant simply to convey how appropriate the specific opening is for the level of player being discussed, in terms of, for example, how much so-called "theory" (i.e., documented variations) the opening encompasses, or how much emphasis the opening places on positional versus tactical skills in order to play it well.

So, an opening they refer to as "garbage" for a beginner may in fact be appropriate for higher rated players who typically know more of the theory for particular openings and have a more highly developed understanding of positional concepts.

My favorite "gambit" used to be the Polerio Defense:

You lose a pawn, your horse is a joke, pawn structure also a joke, but the computer say you're up 2 pawns... if I was a good tactician, I would see why Mr. computer thinks so, but alas.

Smith Morra is super strong, I played against it. weaker players can beat me if I take the pawn, I'd rather push it - laughing at his bishop.

Toad1258

I play the Evan's gambit and I don't get to play it a lot but when I play it I almost always win

rxcricket

I play the Queen's Gambit and Vienna Gambit... the Queen's Gambit is useful when accepted by black, but this doesn't happen too often. The Vienna Gambit is accepted more often (when I play it) and is easier to play when declined.

The King's Gambit, however, is slightly dangerous for white if Nf3 isn't played right away.

Botez Gambit is the best, sadly Levy doesn't put that in his list sad.png

I love the King's Gambit. It has never been refuted even though it is rarely played. Judith Polgar beat Vaselin Topalov in 2010 with the KG in 26 moves. Remember, this was *peak* Topalov. That was the same year he played Anand for the World Championship.

@rxcricket - Judith played the bishop's gambit line of the KG, which doesn't play an early Nf3 and allows the check by the queen. It's not dangerous if you know what you're doing.

Unstoppable: Nakhmanson...
