Giucco Piano - 5.d3 vs. 5.d4

My intuition here is 5.d4. The conventional wisdom seems to be 5.d3 and I'm trying to figure out why. Isn't the quick attack to the middle worth a pawn? Also, 5.d3 seems to be a waste of 4.c3.

What am I missing?

There isn't a quick attack, black is developed and only needs one move co castle.

But I don't play the Italian game. Give the position that you think is advantageous for white.

5. d4 is the move white would like to play of course and naturally it's the move white players first experimented with. It's already featured in some of the Greco's games. However, it leads to a very forcing play and has basically been analysed to death which is why GM's nowadays mostly favour d3 after which there are less forcing lines and you can just play chess.

Unfortunately white can't keep the pawn centre after d4 and it resolves the tension a lot quicker than d3, which allows black a freer game.

Thanks for the comments. Here are roughly the two positions I have in mind. Isn't the issue here whether the King's pawn is worth the lost tempo? I think I get the fact that 5.d3 allows White to castle sooner but would appreciate if someone would flesh out the logic for me.

The e pawn is definitely worth the 'lost tempo'. It's not even a lost tempo as it allows development of the bishop.

The position that is advantageous? A video by an IM says that white has a slight advantage after 9...Nxd5

Nah it is about equal. IM's want to sell video's and a video that states black is equal for a white system probably wont sell ;)

The position often ends in a repetiion of moves after Qb3/Na5/Qa4 and avoiding it by Nce7 does lead to a little more free game for white. Other white moves are totally equal

However black can use the line giving by xxvalikxx and while the position is still equal white does have to solve some problems to avoid getting worse.

The devil is in the details here. Anyway, there's nothing terribly wrong with 5. d4 and at your level it might well even be more effective than 5. d3 since if black doesn't react correctly he may easily get into trouble.

If you like d4, why not just play it and see what your opponents do.
