Halloween

The newest opening Ive taken up is the Halloween gambit, you sacrifice a knight for a pawn and a massive attack on blacks king.I know it relatively well and I know that if black plays correctly they can have a huge positional(but not material) advantage. This is why I usually only play it in blitz. Can someone help me and a rating of this opening on a scale of 1-10 would be nice also.

1. The best reference I am aware goes back to 2005

Unorthodox Openings Newsletter Nr 13 (net published)

Paul Keiser  - Critical lines in the Halloween Gambit

2. I've dabbled with the opening including a vote chess game. From my limited experience both sides for advantage attempt to gain control of the d5 & f5 squares. Also I would suggest blitz and standard time control.

Good luck

I just don't think 4.Nxe5 is sound.  I have played it a few times in blitz play.

I personally dislike ne5, though there is no reason that it is not sound.

I posted most of games involving grandmasters playing the Halloween or Halloween reversed to this thread.  Magnus Carlsen played the Halloween reversed once.

I beat a 2300 with the Halloween in a blitz game when I was rated 1500. He has since taken it up, playing it against titled players with good results. I gave it up a long time ago.

Against titled players?  Are the games in any database?

On edit:  my TWIC database of recent games shows it played 9 times since 2007, all but once by amateurs, and against lower-rated players.  The only master to essay it was Ravot (2276) at the Babero Open in Spain, 2009, winning against a 2151 opponent.  He won in 28 moves.

I lost to the Halloween Gambit against NM Ernest "Steve" Colding here at chess.com a couple of years ago. Over the course of the game (and several others we played) he mentioned he had played it a number of times at pretty big OTB events over the course of his career.

is it his main opening?
