help with sicilian

I was wondering on the book lines of the sicilian, if we didn't follow the book lines of the sicilian!

what would the best response for black be to 3.e5?!!

Thanks!

Not many here will agree with 3.e5   First off, pawn pushing without any plan loses games.  Secondly, you need to develop your pieces in the openings.  Kings are rarely checkmated by pawns.  Black is not going to play dxe and help you out.  He will develop his own piece playing his QN to c6.  So should you and play - 3.Nc3 .....or you could play 4.Bb5+ which may be more along the lines of your thinking.

Fact is, the entire Sicilian is booked.  Getting off the main lines may mean (simply) you would be playing inferior moves.  No reason not to book up on the Sicilian since it is played so much of the time by Black.  It would not be a waste of your time.

nc3 e5 is not good for white

what would my next move be, if that was to occur?

I would probably move Kight to C6...

Just develop naturally. In this situation I would probably play 3. ...Nc6. If white answers 4. Bb5, black's best move would be a6 forcing a trade of bishop for knight. If white tries to maintain the pin with 5. Ba4, black can play b5! forcing the bishop to move. Once the bishop moves, black can play dxe5 without losing material.

but isn't the doubled pawn going to weaken my endgame?

Avatar of cheesemaster3000

True, doubled pawns can be weak in the endgame, but in this position black is fine, if not better. In compensation for the doubled pawns black has the bishop pair which can be a powerful weapon in the end game. Also the doubled pawns open up the b-file for the rook. In addition, doubled pawns aren't doubled forever. There is still a possibility that you can trade one of your doubled pawns for one of white's connected pawns.

bishops over knights? if he still has both knights by endgame, wouldn't he have an edge?  for the bishop's reign to truly take place I would have to trade a rook for 2 knights, right?

Avatar of cheesemaster3000

Most of the time, by the endgame very little material is left on the board. The two bishops on an all but empty board can cut deep into the enemy lines and create huge problems. The two knights on an almost empty board take longer to move long distances. If you have your two bishops and pawns against his two knights and pawns, you will see that the bishops can dominate the knights on an empty board.

Nc6(mentioned above) then pawn must take or white will be behind material(or queen can protect, but then Nc6 gained tempo) take back with pawn and free up some pieces(mainly your bishop and queen). Be prepared for queen check followed by attacks on the weak square after the bishop moves. Just like the scandinavian, so be ready...

The suggested 3...Nc6 4.Bb5 a6 5.Ba4 b5 wins the bishop after 6.Bb3 c4, so White would play 5.Bxc6+. Black should think of development and flexibility. Move 3 could be e6, a6, Bg4, or d5. A bad example for White is 3...e6 4.Bb5+ Bd7 5.Bxd7+ Qxd7 6.exd6 Nc6 7.d4 cxd4 8.Nxd4 Nxd4 9.Qxd4 Bxd6 10.0-0? Bxh2+ 11.Kxh2 Qxd4.

SHUTTLECHESS92,

1.e4   1.c5

2.Nf3  2.Qa5

HOW ABOUT THAT ONE?

WHITE WON'T BE PLAYING d4 RIGHT OFF THE BAT.

Avatar of shuttlechess92

isn't it harmful to move queen out so early?

Avatar of cheesemaster3000

yes, 2. ...Qa5 is a bad idea. Stick with 2. ...d6 or 2. ...Nc6
