How deep do you prepare?

Yea I was horrified of the Staunton whenever someone played it OTB, because it means they actually have studied the Dutch (no one is supposed to study the freakin' Dutch! I was only a 1600!)

just Staunton tho?

It is indeed one of the main choices when opting for the tricky sideline strategy. Back then I didn't like 2. e4 fxe4 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Nc6 5. d5 Ne5 6. Qd4 Nf7 and to me White was going nowhere so I gave it up quite quickly.

I don't know how the Staunton does these days but regarding 2. Bg5, Black players have learned how to deal with it over the years and it has become less and less effective.

I try to prepare deeply & broadly as black vs e4, d4 and c4. As white I prepare narrowly and only deep enough that I get a position I understand. Against stuff I dont think much of, I don't prepare. (This included the Scandanavian until a high 2400 played it against me in an OTB tournament. I lost eventually and have been looking at it a bit since.) If I lose a game in any format I look at the opening and how GMs played the MG.
