What I really wonder,Spongy, is have you read any of tbese books you suggest beginning players read?

I suggest that you ask this question in a thread where I have actually posted a list of books.

So you don't have a post number or quote that you wish to provide?

Lovebecause.  I am sorry this thread got so twisted.  But if you are curious about what one grandmaster has to say about, not studying the openings, but on learning how to develop an opening repetoire look at Alexander Yermolinski's book The Road To  Chess Improvement.  Good luck. I hope that will answer your question.
