Well I'm looking to create some sort of imbalance. Such as opposite side castling. I do recall that there are some lines in which black castles queen side but can't remember what the line exactly is.
How to fight against the Exchange French as black?
ratingkeepsgoingup is actually right here. The main thing in the exchange is to understand the positional nuances. For example, I get the following a lot:
Maybe I am trying to create an imbalance too soon. This is still the most annoying varitaion of the French imo.

There is nothing annoying about being close to 100% equal as early as move 3.
Hurray! I just had the Exchange French and I annoyed the hell out of white by copying his moves and I eventually won even though my sacrifice was unsound at the end
Why not? It's the best move.
Sure but it's 100% method for black to avoid French Exchange. ![]()
play Bd6, Ne7, 0-0, Bf5, and play f6 if white goes Bg5. Sometimes you can play c6, Na6 Nc7 if you put your queen on d7, or if you want to defend the e6 square, as it may become weak after Bg5 and f6
There's an interesting way to play this variation which gives me somewhat good results. You have to be/get good at endgames though, because you'll get very often a king-vs-king w/ multiple pawn endgames, or knight-vs-bishop, knight-vs-knight, etc. While it's not my favorite variation from white, I wouldn't say it's dull either.
Normally this leads to very dull positions. I was wondering if someone could provide some insight into what can make this a fighting opening. I am speaking from the black side of course.
