How to get an opening named?

Sort:
sanchez3

I've created an variation of an opening. It works from what I've seen and I was wondering how to get it named the way I want. I will of course show it to a high rated player as I am only a 1700 FIDE, and if he says it's good, I'd like to get it named.

Thanks,

Sanchez

Are you sure it hasn't been played before?

I did

Get it named the way you want?....How wonderful....but even if you do manage to get your variation called what ever you want, the simple fact of the matter is someone will come along and either prove that it already exists or rename what you invented. No more, no less.

Lol he will come and tell us his variation introduces a revolutionizing and deep idea in move 5.

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 h6!!

You are right Sanchez!!! You discovered a brand new variation, go and show the world your discovery!

This weakening move which makes it easier for White to attack on the kingisde avoids Bg5 and lets Black play 6...a6!! starting his queenside attack without worrying about Bg5. Black will let White pray open the center-kingside thanks to the h6-hook to play Kd8!!!! Putting his king in safety where White can't target it, leaving White with no play, letting Black take over the initiative.

You don't. As soon as your opening comes out I will buy it and change it's name to something Trump-related.

Yes, well this is one more thread that has obviously nothing to do with Kostic. Am I right? Has anyone claimed any names, ever? Speaking of blogs, there's something known as chess cafe. Anything? Ever? How come?

Chess Cafe is sh*t. I used to shop there. The layout of their site was light years better than chess4less ever has been. Chess4Less the search function is cr*p and they can't even figure out what a king pawn opening is, as for example, you go to the king pawn section and you find a bunch of books on the Kings Indian Defense. I know the "CEO" of the company, and he is extremely knowledgeable, but the tech guys he hires and whoever else is there clearly knows very little.

That said, they are an honest business with great discounts. Chess Cafe, maybe 2 to 3 years ago, decides to take orders and never deliver, basically pulling a scam. Lucky for me, I did not buy anything during that scam stretch, but I know others that did.

Nobody should utter the words "chess cafe" ever again. Books are hard to get in the USA these days with Chess Cafe being a scam, Chess 4 Less having a non user friendly website (for example, they should not just make sure that their books are in the right category, but they also need to split up the categories like Sicilian, French, Nimzo-Indian, Dutch, Beginner Books, Tactics, Instruction, Endgames, etc), USCF Sales is a rip off, Amazon lacks certain publishers, for example, I can't recall the name but the one that published The Safest Sicilian, The Easiest Grunfeld, and the Dreev books on the Semi-Slav, Caro-Kann, Cozio, etc, and all others in the USA lack selection.

But still, Chess Cafe is the worst, they are crooks, like Trump!

Alekhine, in his book, wanted a variation of the Ruy Lopez named after himself, or some suggestion he proposed.  (Although he did not invent the Alekhine's defense.)  If the current world champion doesn't know how this is done, I'm sure nobody is going to listen to commoners like us.

Back in 85-88, I played an opening starting 1. f4 d5 2. e4.  In 1992, a guy in prison claims he invented this opening and wanted it called the Williams Gambit.  It is a bad opening so even if anyone took the opening seriously, the name probably would never get printed.

Why do people come to a forum and post non-subject related garbage?  Why do we have monitors if they don't delete these posts?

so another thought about this naming business,--

the purpose of a name is to allow for many people to accurately discuss a variation that is played by top players and has significance as new "theory" of an established opening.

you have little hope in getting something named, if your variation is not picked and embraced by many top players.

Even if lots of Top players WOULD start using "your" opening, though, they might STILL decide that the current name is good enough

but if they aren't using your variation- and didn't read about it with interest and enthusiasm, you have no hope.

by the way, its not as if, people here at chess.com haven't tried.   perhaps you are not remembers the Santa Claus opening- where in one thread, there was quite a few people that tried to collectively create a named opening.

more successfully, though, I wager you can talk to quite a few people and drop the Bongclod opening- and they would understand.  it was the "worse" opening ever developed, and yes it was named right here at chess.com.

this proves that if you're going to be ignored by the leading grandmasters- you best hope for naming anything is to make it ridiculous- and catch people's attention.

Play tournament chess, beat a couple of titled players with your opening... (preferably super-GMs). Eventually people might attach your name to that opening.

Alternatively, become a friend of Magnus, make him play your opening and tell everyone that you taught him how to play it.

Thanks for showing your incomformities. As future president of America my goal is to please all my U.S. citizens.

I looked forward on your problem and bought a full cargo of chess books from Russia.

As for getting an opening named after someone...

(p. 177)
One chess opening is even called the Woozie,
but don't ask me why. In the U.S., chess players
call another opening the Fried Liver attack--so
you can see that just about anything goes! To get
credit for a new opening system, you must play
that opening in a major tournament or publish
your analysis to back up your claim. Don't try too
hard, however, because coming up with some-
thing no one has tried before is very, very hard
these days--believe me.
