How to meet Bf5 in the London System?

Hi everyone, I've started playing the london system recently and I really like it. The only problem is when Black plays Bf5, wich I think it's the most annoyng move in this system. Wich setup would you raccomend me after: d4 d5; Bf4 Bf5? or d4 d5; Bf4 Nf6; e3 Bf5? (Some tactical and sharp line, where I can eleminate the Black's bishop). Thanks in advance, and I apologize for any probable grammar mistakes😉

It's your opponent who chooses whether to play 2...Bf5 or 2...Nf6. The latter might be slightly better. happy.png

There are various ways of dealing with ...Bf5 in the London System, which is an opening I play occasionally.

If you are intent on trading off black's light squared bishop, then you can simply play Bd3 at some point. However, I don't feel that it's necessary often, and instead if black plays ...Bf5, your plan will be to develop normally and advance on the queenside.

Occasionally, black may allow his/her bishop to be eliminated by Nh4, although it's rarely that great for white anyways to do so.

In conclusion, you should simply ignore the Bf5 in most lines (and get rid of it if you feel it's really annoying), and develop normally, then play for c4+Qb3 ideas, basically advancing on the queenside.

I'm assuming you know the typical ideas of the London System already.

I know this is probably not very helpful, but if

I only play the london, and I always go for c4 against Bf5. It makes the most sense, as black's dropping the guard of b7, you have to try to punish it somehow. Otherwise, black's just too comfortable.

Who's angry? Just laughing at your stupidity. You don't even play chess here so who's the coward? What's wrong? Don't want everyone to know you're a 1000 rated nobody?

And I'm an astronaut!

Prove it.

Just did this to an 1800-level player:

For the record, I'm a 1900-rated OTB player who peaked at 2000 and that is easily proven.  I play on another server but post here.

Lying about people isn't a good idea.  People get sued for it.  Now please retract your statement or I can have a court do it for you.

If I had your level of manners I could have a much greater laugh at your expense.

HOLY HELL, DUDE! 2000???? Wow, you're so good at chess, why don't you impart more of your knowledge onto me. You can insult my opening play, but if you played black against me in a tournament, I'd wipe you off the board. I'll take equality out of the opening. You know why? Because I'm familiar with the position and I'm generally a very good positional player. You know why? Because I didn't spend all my time learning openings. You're just an idiot trying to lord over weak players by playing the expert card (even though you aren't one now, lol). If you knew so much about chess and how it was meant to play, you wouldn't be so weak.

I used to play Ne5, g4, f3, h4, KxB on g6. Bd3. White is winning. This works for black too.

As someone here mentioned before, the best against Bf5 is c4.

The problem (for many London players) is that they play London because they do not like to play c4. They prefer c3 and that is why Bf5 is annoying for many London players. :-)

Can you explain why c4 is useful in attacking b7? Why not c3?
