I usually play Bb5 Sicilians when I play against the Sicilian eg.

I am quite happy playing these sorts of positions. However I am not so comfortable if my opponent plays 2. ...g6:

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could do from this position? Failing that is there anywhere I could find out for myself (a book, video etc.)? Any help would be appreciated Smile

I'm assuming you want to avoid main lines with lots of theory... you could always try the Alapin-type move, 3. c3 preparing d4. Often black will play d5 at some point and you can push past with e5, blocking black's bishop, and after say ...Bg4 your move Bb5+ now makes sense.

For example:

When I mentioned to my chess coach I had no idea how to play against the siccilian but I understood the idea for it with black is to stop a d4 thrust from white, he told me white should play d4 and trade pawns. Thoughts on this and why you play Bb5?

I like the line suggested by Nytik btw, c3 d4 looks good.

The Hyper Accelerated Dragon is a great opening, if white plays 5.Nc3. If white goes for the Maroczy bind with 5.c4 it is very difficult to handle.

Try out the Maroczy Bind, it's not a guaranteed win or anything, but it significantly reduces blacks winning chances and white can have a lot of fun.

I have recently got the book "How to beat the Sicilian defence" by Gawain Jones and I have played a couple of games with his line and it seems to work quite well so I think I will use that. Thanks for the suggestions (especially to Nytik - I won a game in live a couple of weeks ago against a higher rated player with that line you suggested). The reason I decided not to play that line is because black can transpose to c3 Sicilians which I don't play although I may come back to it if I ever pick up those lines Smile.

The book Starting Out: The Accelerated Dragon by Andrew Greet has a 40 page chapter on the Hyper Accelerated Dragon.

Be sure to have something for e6 sicilians too! (Black plays c5, e6 and a6 before moving any pieces)

The Maroczy Bind is why I quit playing the Hyper Accelerated Dragon.  Now I use the Maroczy Bind against it.

I also prefer playing Maroczy against any kind of accelerated dragon setups (either 2...g6 or 2...Nc6 3.d4 cd4 4.Nxd4 g6)

With black, I always stick to 2...d6, 4...Sf6, 5...g6 move order to have white play Nc3 and block the c pawn. If white choses unusual move order like 1.e4 c5 2.c4 I switch to hedgehog structures with Be7 - for me, they are better suited to counter white's strong centre (no Nd5 for white, black has less problems to play d5 or if he plays f5 there are much less weaknesses compared to fianchetto setups)
