Hyper Accelerated Dragon

Any advice for this opening? Is it considered weak, and problematic? I have been trying it for 2 years with mixed success. Here is one of the situations I often seem to get into>>

Not sure if this is good or not. Pawn d5 and Qa5 are the main moves I try to play after this

ChrisZifo

Another situation is the Maroczy Bind.

White has control over the d5 sqaure, and one of the main aims of playing the hyper accelarated dragon was to play d5, so always tricky from this position. What ideas do you have for black from here?

Indirect

The first diagram is very good for black, you have the right ideas, however the second diagram is why most people avoid playing the hyper-accelerated. The Maroczy Bind is simply too strong.

ChrisZifo

So what do you recommend against e4? The Pirc defence? The Najdorf?

Indirect

Well if you don't want to deal with the Maroczy Bind, and since you already play the Hyper-Accelerated Dragon, just switch to the Accelerated version, as that avoids the Maroczy, or play the regular Dragon, although White can still play the Maroczy in the regular Dragon...

I totally agree with you

Regarding comparisons with the Accelerated Dragon: With 2...g6, you have avoided 2... Nc6 3. Bb5. You have allowed 2...g6 3. c3 (g6 is not the most common approach against a c3 Sicilian) and 2... g6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Qxd4.

The Maroczy can be played against both.

This is not intended to be a complete list but rather just the most significant differences in my view. When choosing whether to play the Accelerated or Hyper Accelerated, you might want to look at the 3 lines above and decide which ones you most want to avoid or allow. If you don't want to play against the Maroczy, then neither order will help you.

Try this if you want a sharp unusual open Sicilian:   https://www.chess.com/video/player/why-simon-loves-the-sicilian-the-dragodorf

So often it is to read about not being willing to play as Black against the Maroczy ... Is it really so unpleasant or dangerous for Black?

schachfan1

Thank you for the explanation, IM pfren. As Black, I did not often face Maroczy (preferring 1. ... e6 over 1. ... c5, but both are good) - upon (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3) as Black I play either 2. ... Nc6, tending to e7-e5 after 3.d4 cd 4.Nxd4 Nf6 (4. ... immediate 4. ... e5 is interesting, too) 5.Nc3 e5; or 2. ... d6 tending to Dragon variation. But really - in both cases I rarely face Whites structures with c2-c4.

The Dynamic Dragon...squares beware!
ByJ. Martinezon November 9, 2009

I must give a thumbs up to the, IM Andrew Greet, who has done an oustanding job on this dynamic opening. This book has a good introduction to the Sicilian Accelerated Dragon. White players can also benefit from this book too.

Here is a sneek preview of the book contents:

1. The Hyper-Accelerated Dragon
2. 5 Nc3-Classical and Other lines
3. Yugoslav Accelerated Dragon: Introduction and 7...Qa5!?
4. Yugoslav Accelerated Dragon: Mainline with 7...0-0
5. Lines with Nxc6
6. Maroczy Bind: Classical variation
7. Maroczy Bind: Gurgenidze System
8. Maroczy Bind: 7...Ng4
9. Maroczy Bind: Avoiding Exchanges with Nc2
10. Maroczy Bind: Sidelines

Furthermore, this book gives advice for both black and white. The book covers do's and dont's, themes, sidelines, and provides master games for illustration. At the end of each section, a summary and conclusion are both provided. The reader will have good insight to dynamic system. Dragon players must be prepared for one of white's best setups, namely, "Maroczy Bind". The bind limits black's counter-play to certain degree and gives black a different game to play. The book gives lines to play against the "Marcozy Bind" and white must play accurately to maintain even the slightest edge.

For those who want to play and/or study the Dragon, I would recommend this book and "Accelerated Dragons" by John Donaldson & Jeremy Silman. First, read "Starting Out: the accelerated dragon" and then read "Accelerated Dragons" by John Donaldson & Jeremy Silman in that order. The reader will gain a solid understanding and be prepared as a dragon player.

Overall, this is a good book and great effort by Andrew Greet to cover a dynamic weapon. It's well worth the money spent. A must have, don't let this one pass. Get it!!

That's your adjective.  Can everyone be so "helpful" and provide links to their sites?

Are you the self-appointed forum police?

Are you?

I have a repertoire for sale (digital file) that includes more lines in the Maroczy than any source in the world, and some online videos.  It'd be very "helpful" if I posted a link to it, but others would call it "spam."  Prices are also much lower than the ridiculous amounts I see for flawed-human chess products.  Videos of course are free (and they don't pull in much ad revenue).

Just want to know the rules.

First of all...I have no vested interest, financial or otherwise, in the book or the link to it that I posted.  Secondly this is all the energy I will waste dealing with you.

Wow, people sure do like to argue on here, and find ways to disprove each others comments.  Amazing how people who are intelligent enough to have such high chess ratings can spend time with the most inane arguments and bickering. Maybe they think the forum is a kind of game of wits that can be won as well!

Anyway, thanks to the people who did actually provide some information about the Hyper Accelerated Dragon.

Is there anything to moves like 4...Qb6 or 4...Qa5?

As long as White can handle this transposition, Black has no way to avoid the Maroczy Bind in ANY Sicilian.

Hey dude, what if I play 2...d5?Avoided maroczy right?
