Hyper Modern Defences Playable for Beginners?

I'm a beginner who plays for fun and I am having some "issues" when deciding which defences to study and eventually incorporate into my repertoire when I play as black. I find myself gravitating towards the King's Indian Defence against d4 and the Pirc Defence against e4. I have heard mixed opinions on them, some saying they are sound and some saying they are not at least for beginners (too theoretical, gifting the centre to white leads to complicated positions, etc.) What are your opinions about these openings and other hyper modern defences alike?

If you are going to be playing other players around your own strength, then just about any opening can be considered playable.

Are you wanting to get into competitions or just play with friends?

Mainly playing online and with friends. Not really wanting to get into serious play just yet.

Play openings you feel FUN. Don't bother what other players say or play.

You should try either the KID or Grunfeld Defense. Both are hyper modern. They are theory heavy but in my opinion that should not stop someone from playing them. The KID leads to a more locked center and attacks on the wings whereas the Grunfeld has a more open center. Maybe try both out against your friends and see what you think.

If you want to stick to the Pirc Defence against your friends that is perfectly fine. Maybe read some articles on it to learn the basics. If you want to get into more common defenses against e4 maybe try the French or Caro-Kann or even the Sicilian (theory heavy). Honestly though just play whatever you want to play and get better with those openings.
