I need to learn a system to play against 1. d4

Great thing to start studying the KID.

While studying it for approximately four hours per day, it's assured you will have a slight grip on it after a couple of years or so.

Berder

Above is the setup I normally play as black.  Nf6, e6 and Bb4, then fianchetto on the queenside.  Later on after I castle I will play c5 or d5 to challenge the center.  If white challenges the bishop on b4, I usually trade it for the knight.

I don't have a lot of opening theory memorized but the above setup tends to work OK against a bunch of variations by white.

I understand what pfren says and if you want to play KID against strong opposition, hè is totally right. It is à jungle compared to the dragon, where you have no idea whether you are faster or slower than white. If you however like a mess, I would read Bronstein and plunge in THE Fun. What can happen???

Whoa, sarcasm really improves your rating and chess playing, keep it up! I am not going to play it against a chess master. I am going to play it against some ppl who are from 1200 to around 1400. That is all, hopefully i will win.

Hope dies last.

hi i play d4 alot and against it alot the kid is really comp i try and seem to get cramped positions especialy when white plays the f3 system i would suggest the queens indian when white brings out his kings knight first ,a prophylatic defence of whites e4 square. If you can control e4 u can win or draw many games . Or if he brings out his queens night first use the nimzo-indian defence. Then study ,study study the variations .then after you have mastered those u can try any number of defense d5 and c5 defences would be my next choice after those .The kings indian should probably be last as its probably the hardest to master , I know i've been beaten many times trying to use and not really understanding it. Well good luck and if u want some practise friend me and challenge for a game when im onsite.

I won't read all this posts, so i'm just gonna write here:

If u are low ELO player play Queen's Indian Defense, on your level it is best against d4.

If u want sth which u can play on every level take Nimzo-Indian or Grunfeld Defense.

Since you are from Serbia do your self a favor and by a cheap book (5 $) from BeoSing - A.Suetin: Kako igrati otvaranje. The book explains basic ideas of the openings and it will put you on the right track. Leave KID for later. And Fren is right, with out proper understanding all you will have is positional disaster.

Tomkov

As a general rule: Don´t play openings that were invented after 1900.

Play d5, c6, try to get your Bc8 out asap and then play e6 and develop normally. Yep, the Slav defence. Easy to understand and works against almost any line.

cferrel

Kings Indian Defence is my personal favorite and I just build on it.

Hmm, idk i have started to learn the KID and already have a couple of wins against my friends who are around 1300. As I said before i will try to learn the most imporant stuff in the next 2 months, and i think it will be good, cause ppl that will particepate on the tournament dont know any theory behind an opening. Not sure if they can name any opening, but yea...

Geez... When he's 1200-1300, it doesn't matter if he studies the Dutch defence, the Queen's gambit or the KID. Just studying any opening helps to improve your understanding of why "Nf3 is a good move", if you understand what I mean.

The guy wants to play the KID? So let him play the KID! Do you have to be such a jerk?

Aboba

Well i am not saying that he is a jerk, he is just not helping me a lot. xD I mean the KID is great if you know how to play it, but i tried and the first couple of wins were great but it is just to complex for someone my level. But yea i still need a good system and i will show you what i go up against when playing ppl in the tournament (the examples are below)

I have heard that the Colle System KID Variation is pretty good, it goes like this:

So i am thinking about the Colle System right now =)

Tomkov

What about 1 d4 c5?

If 2.e4 cd4 you have your beloved Sicilian, if 2.dxc5 e6 you also have a sicilian structure. If 2.c3 or 2.e3 you could play e6-b6-Nf6-Be7-Bb7, easy to play

So that leaves 2.d5! and now ... f5!? and they are on their own

Here´s an one hour lecture about this line. Cannot make it easier for you.

Let say in your game you end up with king and rook and pawns vs rook and king or king and rook and pawn vs king and rook. Do you know if these position are drawn or lost?

Let say in your KID game you have a mate in 6, are you already good tacticaly to find mate in 6?Do you already eliminated simple blunders in your game?(losing pieces) What I am saying is at below master level, you should not worry much about opening, just learn the general ideas like fight for the center, concentrate on endgames, tactics and strategy...There are players who become IM without giving opening a really deep study...

Aboba

I think i get the point :D i will just try and play as much chess and gain experience, study tactics and strategy here a bit and i think that i will be okay =) Tnx for the help guys :D
