I am proud to say I witnessed the very end of this.
I ranked all 20 responses to e4 for black
Yeah I did blunder there, but before I blundered the rook I was in a good spot. Good job on your win though Angry Puffer.

I like the French, only because it lets me do my username, but even I wouldn't put the French first. Top 10 out of 20, definitely, but first is a bit of a stretch.
I fully agree. French is my favorite defense against e4 (with Alekhine’s as a close second) but it’s definitely third, no doubt in my mind about that. Sicilian is best (most games in it, Black’s better win rate, and thematically it just makes sense), Open is second best (second most games in it, incredibly easy to play for a draw, French is third, and Caro is tied for third or fourth depending on your perspective.

another victim of the Bd3 french...
Yeah. On my end Qc7 is hope chess, f6 was the worst move I have played literally all week, and then I just played a bad endgame down 2 points of material and castled into an attack. GG
edit: don’t know what I was smoking to not just play Nge7 and continue normal plans up a pawn.

Tips for Ethan:
- No need to play cxd4 on move 9. Leave the tension and continue developing. White's pawn on c3 hinders his queenside development. Keep it there, if possible, until white plays Nbd2 - then you can play cxd4 (if you must), to "embarass" the knight (because it would rather go to c3).
- Don't go chasing the e-pawn so soon. Black is behind in development and doesn't have time to get pawn greedy while still undeveloped.
- Be7 took away your knight's most logical way to get into the game: Ne7-Nf5. (or Ne7-Ng6, as an alternative). Play ...Ne7 there, instead.
Here's how your game could've looked:
Equal stuff, with play for both sides. (Ne7-Ng6 was also playable, too.)

++ I know that’s technically the correct solution, but I much prefer taking (allowing the knight to go to c3) so I can play Ng8-e7-f5 (back to e7 if g4, then h5 ruining White’s king safety in the late game) then Be7 or Bb4.

++ I know this. That’s the first time I’ve ever even thought about it, I don’t know why I did it in this game, and it definitely spelled the beginning of the end.

++ Yep. That’s my usual. Again, I don’t know what I was thinking this game.
