Ideas with the Evan's Gambit

Hi Everone

I am intrested in the Evan's Gambit, and wondered if anyone had any ideas for white when it is used. It goes:

e4           e5

Nf3         Nc6

Bc4         Bc5

b4

The basic idea is to play c3 and d4. Do you have any ideas for white and for black as well?

     Thanks

4. b4 is the Evan's Gambit. That is the main line, though.

What, to give away a free pawn?!

Yes. 5. Ba5. After Be7, white can get an advantage.

In learning to play the Evans Gambit, there are two games I believe that are worth your time to study.

They are:

  1. The "Evergreen" Game: Anderssen-Dufresne, Berlin 1852
  2. And Kasparov-Anand, Riga 1995

Wow! Thanks a lot.

If the other player doesn't follow up with bc5, what would u call that? cuz i play 2. nf3 nc5 3. Bc4 and often do not get the answer of bc5...

If they don't play Bc5 then you can't play the evans gambit

This is my favortive line of the evans gambit black will have a difficult time.

No, to draw black's bishop onto an unfavorable square and gain time. The loss of the pawn is usually only temporary or a minor nuisance at worst in the Evan's because it gives white good attacking possibilities and fractures black's defense pretty quickly. I hate playing against the Evan's so much that I deliberately avoid any line that has the potential to turn into an Evan's variation when I am playing black. You are usually scrambling on the defense from the moment that pawn is pushed up in your face whether you take it or not. In fact, not taking the pawn can be worse than if you did take it.
