If I want to play KIA then should I start with 1.e4 or 1.Nf3

Is there any way Black can avoid the KIA lines.

blueemu

Either way.

The KIA is sometimes a bit boring if Black responds to e4 with ... e5, so one possibility is to open with 1. e4 and play the Ruy Lopez (or whatever you like) if Black responds with ... e5 (thus avoiding a KIA vs e5) while against the Sicilian, or the French, or the Caro-Kann, or the Alekhine, you play 2. d3 and 3. Nbd2 then head into a KIA.

You know there's a club, yes?

Hey thanks. I have started playing the KIA and so far getting good results.

blueemu

I'm sure I've shown you my "big three" KIA games, yes?

No but you showed me the first few moves of the KIA and I followed this system with good results. I am also playing the Pirc as black and I try to play it like I would the KID.

Why don't you post the three games that you are speaking of?

This is a good idea. There's also a really cool book that has just come out. I link it here:-

I was White in all three. The first two followed "The Long Variation", a favorite of Fischer's. In the third one Black tried exchanging in the center instead of keeping it semi-closed.

Here's the first one:

Cool Game. I play in a different way. Goes to show that it is a versatile opening.

blueemu

Here's a game where my opponent tried to play both d5 and e5 in the opening. This can be done, of course, but in the game I found an unusual way to get counter-play:

And one more, Where Black tried to equalize by trading off in the center.

@blueemu you play in a completely different way from me. You seem to like the pushing of the h pawn whereas i try for the f4 break

The push of the h-Pawn is associated with ideas of Bf4 and Ng5... the h2-h4 move just nails down the dark squares for my pieces.

The push of the f-Pawn (like you usually do) is associated with an entirely different plan: a Pawn storm on the K-side.

One strength of the KIA is that there are several different plans available for White... including Q-side expansion with c3 and a4.

Sure that Black can avoid KIA lines. For example, Herrstrom gambit grin.png:

And of course, if you are entering the KIA via 1. e4, then the Scandinavian counts as an anti-KIA system. There's no good way into the KIA after. 1. e4 d5

I often start with 1. g3. What's-his-name's opening.

... I'll never forget old what's-his-name...

EDIT: Benko! 1. g3 is Benko's Opening.

That's totally true I go for a king side pawn storm always.

blueemu

You should try to diversify your plans a bit, then!

pdve

@blueemu Maybe. Can you suggest a good book on the KIA or some other resource.

blueemu

Mmmmm... not off the top of my head.

Kindaspongey is the guy for that.
