Because something or some game is not in chess explorer does not mean it does not exist.  I have played thousands of games not recorded in chess explorer.

This is a guess but I would guess chess explorer has less than 10% of all games played.

Chess explorer can be useful but when using chess explorer please know it does not always give the best moves or continuations.

True. When a trap as complicated as tarrasch's was found in this opening I would be very surprised if this was never found before.

Also, just because a trap isn't in game explorer doesn't mean it isn't (somewhat) known. Masters just don't fall into traps.

So, I'm not trying to take credit, I just think it's a nice trap that has a high success rate (against amateurs) in my personal experience.

FancyKnight, this trap, though not very known, was played before, so you can't say you invented it. The most recent game in that variation(1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 d6 4.d4 Bd7 5.dxe5 Nxe5 6.Nxe5) is from 8 years ago, here's the link: http://www.365chess.com/opening.php?m=12&n=51829&ms=e4.e5.Nf3.Nc6.Bb5.d6.d4.Bd7.dxe5.Nxe5.Nxe5

Still, it's a very good one, that i just know because of your thread. Thanks!

The reason it's not in the database is probably because dxe5 is a terrible move. Much better is Nc3 or 0-0...

What about this?

Pre_VizsIa

5...Nxe5 is justified by 6...Nf6, no?

clunney

After 6. ...Nf6?????, black's down a piece.... White can just play Nxd7 and black can resign.

clunney

This just seems mindblowing to me, since after 5. ...dxe5!, black is actually better (I cannot understate how horrible a move 5. dxe5? is.)

Pre_VizsIa

hmm

The_Worstiest

clunney, if 5...dxe5, white can play the 'common' 6.Nc3 or 6.O-O and he is fine.

clunney

He's given black d4 and freed up black's dark square bishop (which 3. ...d6 blocked in, and the dark squared bishop will of course remain passive for a long time since in most normal lines [which massively favor white by the way] white doesn't free up black's position by the insipid dxe5). The question is not whether black is equal, it's whether white is fighting for equality. If white is looking for any sort of advantage (especially since 3. ...d6 sucks) then 5. dxe5 is surely a poor way to go about it.

Looks like my thread started a forum-wide Daeth revivial!
