I was looking for variation to avoid kings gambit if I play 2....e5. I just hate it when I play against it except if am I white and play Kings gambit. Is Caro Kann good defence against whites 1.e4 and if it is why is that ? And if you think that it is not good

defence against 1. e4 tell me why. Thanke you :)

The CK is a highly positional opening. You also have to learn a bit of opening to make sure that you aren't giving an advantage before move 10. Otherwise, very solid.

It seems to be good for the reason that most players spend the majority of their time learning how to beat 1. ...c5 and 1. ...e5.  The caro is smaller to learn from white's point of view and they are often less prepared.

Interesting answer.  I study Caro Kann only because its not much studied by white and not well known answer to 1.e4.

heister

That being said.. I personally am thoroughly prepared, so at some point you'll stop running into opponents that fall into that category.

yep i enjoy playing the caro kann, so did Karpov

Yes.

I think that the best black defenses to 1.e4, in no particular order, are moving your e-pawn or c-pawn one square or two.

So is Caro Kann more positional opening ?

ozzie_c_cobblepot

For people who don't know their openings, I'd say yes. If you just play some kind of a normal setup like

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 cxd5 4.Nf3 Nf6 5.Bd3 Bg4 6.o-o Nc6 7.Re1 e6 8.Bg5 Be7 9.Nbd2 o-o

Then both sides will have to come up with something. It's not like you've got obvious tactics at move 10.

Contrast that with some of the many tactical openings coming out of 1.e4 e5 and you might agree that C-K is more positional.

But - before you dismiss the C-K too quickly, here's a nice [well-known] trap in the Caro-Kann, which is kind of tactical.

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nd7 5.Bc4 Ngf6 6.Ng5 e6 7.Qe2 Nb6 8.Bd3 h6 9.N5f3 c5 10.dxc5 Nbd7?! 11.b4 b6 12.Nd4 bxc5? 13.Nc6! Qc7

and now for the coup de grace

14.Qxe6+! fxe6 15.Bg6#

The ck is a positional opening in so far as it can take longer for things to happen. That being said it can be played aggressive.

Good opening, used to play it myself, got alot of advanced variation (3.e5) games, got bored, and moved on to another opening.

At the moment, my favorite variation to face is the advance.

MrDamonSmith

Is the Caro Kann a good defence to e4? Yes.

ViktorHNielsen

You should not use the caro-kann to avoid the KG. It's not a very dangerous opening

redchessman

I heard from a Gm that the caro kann should be only played by players above 2000 as the positional subtleties are too hard for lower rated players to understand.

BuzzSanders

If you know the opening lines and understand the postional conscepts, it's excellent.  Most players don't know what to do against it.

I agreee.. you shoudn't even be playing chess unless you're at least 2500.

Posting a game where your opponent blunders a bishop on the 13th move doesn't show a single thing about how to beat the Caro-Kann, a solid positional opening that has been popular for centuries and will continue to be popular for several more. Do you really think that an established openining can be "beaten?"
