The French is a Defense, not an Opening, and yes, but only if you actually understand it.
Black has 4 fully sound responses to 1.e4: 1...e5, 1...e6, 1...c5, and 1...c6. The other 16 moves are all inferior, though to varying degrees. For example, 1...d6, while inferior to "The Big Four", is clearly better than 1...h5.
