Play it if you like, but few people have the nerves of steel to go down a pawn so early with the white pieces.
Is the Kings Gambit completely refuted?
- Forget about database statistics.
- The King's Gambit is considered equal, AFAIK.
- It may be unpopular because Black has a wide choice of reasonable defences, so White must put quite some effort in his preparation.
- If you like it, play it. On your (and my) level of play it doesn't matter at all if an opening allows Black to equalise, or to almost equalise only.
- Forget about database statistics.
I love the kings gambit. There are a lot of tactics though and Fischer said this opening was bunk but what did he know? I mean, he was only one of the greatest players of all time, rightt? HA
47%+18%+31.5%= 96.5%????
Who wins the other 3.5%?
At the very top level of chess 31.5% chance of winning really is a lot for black, especially when coupled with 18% chance black will draw.
Nowadays most Super GMs stay away from openings with risk and prefer to play for small chance to win, large chance to draw and almost non existant chance for black to win.
Now, why isn't it more popular at our level? Because people bandwagon the top players hard, since they dont play it people down here believe they shouldnt either.
If carlsen and kramnik started playing 1.g4 it would become popular, not because its good, but because its played by good players.
at high level the way to determine how good an opening for each player goes like this chance of white winning versus chance of black winning + chance of draw the two added figures favour black
The King's Gambit is great at my level. 1800 + USCF. I still get good games with it and since it's not played as often as the Ruy Lopez, many players don't know or forget some of the traps.
Play it. Have fun :)
It is a good opening for fun, if you are a tactical player you can play it. And of course a very good opening in blitz. But you wont get any advantage, if your opponent knows how to play, and you have to learn a lot of theory to play it well. It is a dangerous opening for both sides.
No.
Next question.
I agree 100%, the KG is here to stay. Learn it, play it,love it :)
In the Chessbase Big Database even 2.Bc4 is more often played than the king's gambit.
I've always been of the opinion that it was refuted because of the Fischer defense, but I'll post a king's gambit game from the greatest American player in the history of the world:
Yeah, game was error prone so it was probably a blitz, though it's cool seeing Nakamura playing the king's gambit.
Truth is it's hard on the nerves, and can become a wide open ,messy game.
That is the best kind of game. If it was always a wide open messy game I'd play it exclusivly.

That game was not blitz, it was in fact a major tournament game. Kingscrusher annotates the game on youtube, which I watched before. You'll notice that in this opening black equalized quickly and had an advantage until he let Nakamura back into it. At move 10 and 11 black is clearly better. Nakamura won against Adams who is 2700 FIDE but not because of the opening which he got a disadvantage out of.

Nakamura's not even close to being the greatest American player ever. He's got a long way to go before he claim to be better than Morphy, Marshall, Pillsbury, Reshevsky, Fine, Kashdan, Weinstein and Browne: shall I go on? Having surpassed a few of them already: probably. In the same league with some of the rest of them: maybe. Better than all of them, not a chance. And of course all of the above ignores the elephant in the room....

Whait is wrong with KG? In my database it says 47% win for white 18% draw and 31.5% win for black.
Those are pretty good stats. Why isnt the Kings gambit more popular?
