The Scotch opening would work in a repertoire for 2000+, but if you're a d4 player, don't. The Scotch might be a 'good opening that fits your criteria', but then you'd also have to learn how to play against the Philidor, the Petrov, the French, the Scandinavian, the Pirc, the Caro-Kann, the d6 Sicilian, the e6 Sicilian, the Owen's, the Modern, the Alekhine's, the Nimzowitsch, et cetera. Some of these are essentially inconsequential (decline the Nimzowitsch and play d4 to get a Scotch, for example), but if you're a d4 player, your current skill set is most likely much more geared towards playing QGs, QPOs, Benonis, d4 gambits, and IDs. I wouldn't recommend switching your entire opening repertoire simply to play one opening as White. I'm an e4 player, but recently I've been trying to get into more d4 games, but I refuse to play QGs, so I essentially play Londons and Indian Games (which I have experience with as Black). Learning two entire family of openings as large and varied as Queen's Gambit and Indian or Double King Pawn and Sicilian simply to play a different first move isn't worth it.

I'm trying to learn an opening for white that works in the intermediate level but can also work at the masters level so that i can do mistakes and master it now and if i ever get to 2000 i would not have to change my repertoire. I'm mainly a d4 player but i wouldn't mind changing to e4 if i find a good opening that fits my criteria. I know that scotch opening is good for intermediates but can i really take it to the master or advanced level with me? If not then what minimal theory opening do you recommend after e4 e5 nf3 nc6 or after any move order?
