Ok, i didnt think of this one. Named after city in Germany. The other openings are named after nations in Europe. Just curious, about history. Because there is one famous German word in chess, it is called zugzwang, but not a real opening?

The French Opening could just as easily have been called the Paris. Zugzwang and Szwischenzug are not openings, but chess concepts. The first means that you are in a position where any move you can make is losing, the second, often called a intermezzo, is an in-between move that improves your position before continuing an attack.

It was argued in the 1800s by some that the Evans Gambit should be called the German opening because it was argued that it was first played in Germany. It never caught on.

There is a German Defense to the Polish:

1. b4 d5 2. Bb2 Qd6

However, due to the Polish being a rare starting move, you don’t get many chances to play this defense.

I’ve played the Polish opening exactly once to unlock the achievement. I actually won easily. It’s called the Orangutan sometimes because, as the story goes, Tartakower asked Suzan the Orangutan at the Bronx Zoowhat he should play against Maroczy.

There is a fantastic video on how to defend against the Polish that starts with c6 then a5. I was embarrassed once against the Polish and haven’t lost to it since.

"Alekhine Defense"

I was surprised too when I found out! Apparently for some weird reasons Germany wanted the Evans Gambit to be called "German Gambit" but I might be wrong on this

The Dresden opening: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. c4

I guess the Orthoschnapp gambit and the Naselwaus gambit can be considered to be German as well, their author being a German chess player - Stefan Buecker

The Tarrasch-defense in Queensgambit is german..he was a real good player long time ago.

the german defense

It's a wonderful defense. Black equalizes before a move is made and gives it right back on move two.
