If you dont want to play the c3, d4 variation of the Italian (it is objectively bad)
Top GMs are playing these variations to draw as white. I doubt a draw for white is what most people look for in their main repertoire.

This thread, and many like it, frequently loses sight of the forest for the trees. In the forums, when a low rated or sub-1000 elo player asks a question concerning an opening, sooner or later the answers deviate to discussions of specific lines and their evaluations from the point of view of 1900+ elo players, which is not what the OP was asking, but what a certain type of player insists on answering anyways.
Luckily enough, something I will never have to worry about. As Black, after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3, I avoid both of them and the Ruy Lopez with 2...Nf6!
White? 1.d4!
ew
I play the sicilian lol
and as white, I play the Vienna
or the Alapin
and if 1. d4
I play the Old Benoni, goated opening
I think the best defense against d4 is King Indian defense. Queen's gambit declined is the worst one because bishop would get stuck by it own pawn
We are talking about Italian and scotch games
