How can anyone say which is the best defence? I'll be using 5...Nf6 "Berlin defence" because Burgess says "it is best". And it's either accept that , or flip a coin... or roll a dice or two... given all the options! If get bored with that, playing Blitz, I might try the other options for variety. What about white's next move after the Berlin? Burgess/Gallagher recommend Bc4, with d6 the other main option... bith developing moves. But I wondered about simply Nxg4, and the database seems to think it is "OK".

After several dozens of games with (5.Ne5 Nf6) 6.Bc4 and several dozens of games with 6.Nxg4, you playing as White, you probably would see that the bishop move is more promising

Or study a few master games on the line. But oh...wait... the latter is too tiresome.

I'll avoid that experiment and trust Burgess and Yigor My comment was more related to Yigor's list of 5... moves. Bc4 is defibirely most in spirit to what white is tryig to do... attack f7 as quickly and devestatingly as possible.
In the Long Whip, after 5.Ne5 h5, I play more often 6.d4 than the usual 6.Bc4, they are probably equal in strength, the matter of taste and mood. As for impressions, 6.d4 is more unpleasant for the opponents, it is less studied and it's easier to create problems for them

Ah, yeah, right. Thanks for this remark.
The black pawn structure looks better with the Long Whip defense.

Personally, I prefer Rosenthal defense 5...Qe7. So
Here's Greco-NN (1620) game/composition featuring the Long Whip defense:

I find the Salvio defense annoying because Black can easily force a Queen trade early in the game and get a comfortable position. This is why I prefer the Quaade line over h4.

All right, I got your point about the Quaade line but do U have any preferences among these 8 moves mentioned above?
I think I would try Berlin Defense since it leads to a complex and interesting game (keep in mind though that I don't regularly play 1...e5, but rather 1...c5; this is just what I would play if I got into the position you showed).
What do U think to be the best defense and why ? There are the following lines:
