KIA & KID, style

Hello.

I've been nearly 2 years out of the chess world and Ive come back with strength. I've been playing KIA & KID very effectively. I only play that openings. Both allow me playing them everytime 'cause there are pretty independent of the other player's moves. My thought is that if I always play these openings I will 'master' in them, taking a nice advance over the other player, even if he is slightly better than me.

But, I wouldn't mind having at least another opening for each side. The question is, which one?

I am extremelly confortable with the KIA & KID. The things I want for an opening are:

  1. Allow me to reach the middlegame without having lost the game before
  2. A middlegame that fits my style (I cannot think 2 plays ahead and have more concentration mistakes than expected for my level; but I have a very nice feel for the game)
  3. An opening that avoids theory/books (don't misjudge me, I have spent more time studying openings than most of the people, but I want something that has no variations, see point 4)
  4. An opening that is not extremelly dependable on the other player's moves
  5. A non-open middlegame: my endings are poor to say the least, so I want the most possible pieces alive.
So, as you can see, I am extremelly happy with the KIA & KID. But I want something different. Do you have any ideas/advices for my style?
Thank you very much

Catalan as white? That's all I got. I think your openings are fine for now I guess, but you may fall into an improvment rut with that universal opening strategy.

I have to agree with chess_enigma. The catalan is a good way to expand the KI for whtie. It has the same fianchetto and Nf3 set up but with a more positional set up and a good space advantage. Plus, the catalan still fits into the "universal opening" idea being that it really can't be stopped. However, you really should think about what you want to achieve in the opening. This is a very important aspect of the game and helps with planning and learning elsewhere.

I might also want to try a few variations of the English as well. Again many of these have that same modern play concepts behind them.

For black..... Here's a good universal idea to try.

This 3 moves can essentially be used against most of white's openings. The idea is to give the queen access to put pressure on the b-file and the center from either the a5 square, b6, or c7. Also the bishop exerts pressure on the middle and an "x-ray" onto the b2 spot. With some research and practice this could become a deadly weapon.

The Catalan is a Grunfeld in reverse...I don't see how it compares to the KID.

Do you play the KIA from a 1.e4 move order? If so you might want to slowly phase in some mainline 1.e4 openings, while still keeping the KIA for variations you don't like.

If you play it from a 1.Nf3 move order, I would recommend a similar approach.

As black, why not try a benoni? Or perhaps the Nimzo/QGD/QID complex?

I thought we were trying to maintain similarities to HIS style ;).

As I said before the catalan is similar to the KIA on the entire kingside approach but instead seizes a space advantage and changes play to being more positional than tactical which can help his improvement but keep his comfort zone in tact.

The Catalan and the KIA are about as opposite (plan-wise) as it gets.

I agree that the KID is very stylin.

Thank you very very much for your help.

I'll start analysing:

W: Catalan, Bird, Colle, Stonewall

B: Dutch, Pirc, Benoni, Nimzo/QID

I'll do some work analysing those moves and try findind which ones fits better for me. I'll do it with the Fritz and also online without caring a lot of the game result.

Thank you very much, if anyone has more advices pleas let me know, I'll work hard on them

Thanks again!!

What you are looking for is probably the London System as white. Basically play

d4, Bf4, e3, c3, Be2, Nf3, Nbd2, 0-0, h3 in some valid order and be happy.

You might also consider the English opening also. It's fairly easy to play ok without knowing everything.

As black it's harder to play equally well with equally little theory imo. You'll need to know some theory in KID and Pirc/Modern or you'll get squished by stronger players that know how to play against those systems.

Simpler black defenses are probably two knights stuff maybe.
