can anyone please explain the basic idea/lines/options behind this opening for black as am starting to get this played against me and am a bit lost and not much more than beginner !
As basic as I can put it, the idea is that white temporarily gives up a bishop pawn to draw one of your center pawns out of the center so he can build up a stronger hold there. As black, you usually should not struggle to maintain the pawn but should focus on development. trying to maintain the pawn wastes time and resources you cannot afford to dedicate to pawn defense when you should be developing. You can also decline the gambit pawn. There are too many variations to go into so you should get an opening encyclopedia and study the variations of both accepted and declined and find what works best for you.
