Solid, Dragec?

I've heard it described many things, but solid?

Kasparov famously said that the King's Indian was more risky than the King's Gambit.

Solid?

Actually, I think the underlying structure is indeed very solid. This however only applies if the center is opened by a black ...exd4, rather than closed, and the play is complex, but yeah I do find the opened king's indian central structure, often with pawns on c6 and a5, quite solid, because in fact in one of my games I was almost happy for my center to "collapse", with the d6 pawn dropping, as this allowed me to have increased influence over the dark squares by allowing a rook to hit d4 on the open d file, and sometimes this pressure makes a d4 knight move off and open up the long diagonal for the g7 bishop some more.

The pawns really keep stuff out of key squares quite nicely, and it's one of not so many positions where I do think that black, even though he's down in space, can get very adequate counterplay, meaning, more so than openings like the dutch and benoni in my opinion.

In this game I was happy for the d pawn to go, and ended up with a nice position which I'm currently trying to convert:

Il-Oliveira, you are right. You followed the main line of the Four Pawns Attack very well.

Your play is quite different from what you said though. You counter-attacked very well. This is almost the exact opposite to your statement that you made claiming the KID is solid and that Black should castle and defend. If you had simply defended in that game, you would have been rolled off the board!

(A bit of history: the Volga/Benko Gambit was inspired by some lines in the KID, such as this one!)

Oh, I didn't mean black should stay only defending.

It is just that, as they castle early and the center is somewhat blocked, black is safe to try its counter-attack without worring too much with its king.

Even if everything goes wrong at least the king is safe and it will be dificult for white to hunt it too soon.

That is the kind of safety I was talking about, the liberty to miss moves in the opening without been destroyed right after.

Cn you be aggressive in the middle game with a kid opening?
