I wish more people played ¨unique¨ openings. It would make the game a lot more enjoyable. It gets tiring seeing the ruy lopez and italian game every time I play.

The reason this doesn’t happen, is because those “unique” openings are sub-optimal. Why would you purposely play a worse opening?

There is hardly a difference in some "suboptimal" openings than "good" openings. With computers these days, we can now see that openings like the nimzowitsch defense that were previously considered straight out "bad" are actually quite good. Besides, you'll probably have a much better win rate playing a decent "pet" opening then a well known one because your opponent probably won't have studied it.

I agree with you 100%, but that doesn’t change that, on paper, something like the queen’s gambit is just better than nd2.
