Modern Defense: Standard Defense
The pirc and the modern are essentialy the same thing no? Slightly different move order same plans?
Well, it's similar but definitely not the same. In general: in the Pirc black plays an early Nf6, while in the Modern black doesn't because of a two main reasons:
1. The pawn push to e5 for white is less attractive because it does not attack the knight.
2. Black can maybe play the knight to e7 if that suits its needs better and the knight does not block the pawn on the f-file.
Plus a lot of black players might want to prevent some theoretical lines in the Pirc Austrian Attack (white plays f4). If you play the Modern and later play Nf6 you can easily transpose into the Pirc.
