If you are a beginner, then stay away from all defences with Indian in their name. They are way too complicated to play: you have to find several only moves just to stay in the game.
Most simple and solid is 1 d4 d5. Queen's Gambit Declined, Slav, Queen's Gambit Accepted all right.
Nimzo-Indian Defence vs Kings Indian Defence?

Thanks! Will learn the ones you mentioned. But, I don't get that much queens gambit in my games. Usually its the London system, so any responses to the queens gambit don't work. I will play d5 like you advised, but I also want something to throw to my opponent off guard. Is the Slav something I can use against the London?
Hello everyone,
I am a beginner/novice who joined last year for fun. After a week or so I got bored and went on to other things. I recently began playing again and got into learning openings, theory, etc.
I am getting a lot of 1.d4 in my games and wanted to find a sound counter to it.
I did some research and found the kings indian defence and the nimzo indian defence my top picks. Which is better against 1.d4? Will my experience in chess be a factor? Over all, which gives black better win rates?
Thanks
