Nimzo-Indian Defense Three-Knights Duchamp Variation Question

I had this position in a daily game

The main move here is 7...d5 but 7...d6 is also played sometimes and has a better win rate for black.

After the game I ran the analysis and it says:

"d6 is good +0.40 This move is ok - but not what I would have played."

"d5 is best -0.01"
Can the engine be trusted here? Is d5 actually better than d6 or not?

Kevin, this is similar to get by Gligoric variation by White playing with Bishop.

No need to have trust in engine always because human brain playing against another brain and there is beauty in chess. Maybe opponent dont sees what we see on board. There is too many ideas like always - sometimes we gain tempo, sometimes lose it to reach our plan.

By the way - Looking help public for Daily game is not FAIR PLAY.

Play it against that person and dont ask for help on public. It is unsportative .

The game is over. There are no rules that say you cannot get advice on positions after a game has concluded. That would be ridiculous.

Would definitely prefer d5, more direct central control, and after a3 can play Bd6 or Be7. With d6, after a3, you have to give up bishop pair for pretty much nothing.

I like d5, but c5 is also interesting. This game isn't going to be won or lost because of your decision on this move. All three moves (d6, d5, c5) lead to different, but playable, structures. You might feel much more at home in one of them

These are the continuations recommended by the game review.

A lot of it is how much do you value having the bishop pair in the opening stage of the game? I think the bishop is a bad piece on the c3 square.

Toldsted

Generally you should not trust the engines in openings. Just play the move/position that you like and suits you. That will win you more points.

And even if it the Engine was right then -0,01 = totally equal, while +0,40 = very small White advantage. That means almost nothing at our level.

Wang Hao, Nigel Short, Sam Shankland and Sergey Karjakin all like playing d5 there.

Duda and Akopian have played d6 there.

-0.07 or +0.40 mean exactly the same: a draw with best play from both sides.

TwoMove

After 7...d6 my comment about a3 doesn't make sense because of Ne4. Winning the bishop pair doesn't mean much,  until white has played 0.0, and can keep bishop pair with be1. Anyway, it's all within range of taste.
