Does this variation have a name? Has it ever been played? I can't find any games with this position. I've had some success with it recently, had the idea when planning the London System one game. Reminds me of the Bayonet Attack in the Caro-Kann.

Thoughts? Anybody ever tried this or had it tried on them?

It looks like an interesting attack. blitz.png No name and no master games in the local Explorer but I see 32 internal games in the lichess database.

I believe at least 4 or 5 of those are me. grin.png I've been playing around with it the last few days.

Let's test it out. I'll play black then white!

Nobody plays 3...Nc6

2...Bf5 is a reasonable move but no one on earth would play 3...Nc6.

bayonet attack is against the kings indian defense not the caro kann and no one on earth will play 2...Bf5 and 3...Nc6 but g4 does look like a good move.

@savagechess2k and @RookSacrifice It's certainly not as common as, for exmaple, 3...Nf6, but it's not a bad move either. I see it sometimes. Chess.com has 17 master level games with this position (after 3... Nc6) in it's database, so it's certainly not unplayable, and there's nothing intrinsically wrong with developing the queen knight first. It can also be reached via 1 d4 d5 2. Bf4 Nc6 3. e3 Bf5 too.
